SLS has achieved a dramatic decrease in Scope 1 & 2 emissions at our Gustavsburg, Germany, Circular Center by using LED lighting, renewable energy and decreased water usage.
In order to achieve Sims Lifecycle Services’ (SLS) new three-year carbon reduction goals, we are re-examining every aspect of what we do and how we do it. Our Circular Center in Gustavsburg, Germany, is strategically located near Frankfurt’s data center hub, so we minimize the distances and emissions associated with moving decommissioned material for processing. Once equipment is on-site we want to ensure it is processed as efficiently as possible, so we’ve taken major steps towards lowering the carbon footprint of the Gustavsburg Circular Center.
We are nearing completion of a huge task. All lighting – exterior, interior warehouse and office, and task – is being transitioned to energy-efficient LED lighting. Overall, nearly 400 fixtures covering 4,800 square meters (over 51,000 square feet) are being replaced. This should bring a reduction of 50% of electricity used annually, compared to 2020 levels.
The new lighting contributes to another key aspect of SLS’ sustainability efforts– occupational health and safety. LED lights require less maintenance than traditional lighting, meaning employees spend less time working at heights. Additionally, overall visibility is improved because of the quality of the lighting and its adjusted placement across the facility.
As of January 1, 2022, Gustavsburg is also using 100% renewable energy. Our consumption is matched with Guarantees of Origin certified electricity from European hydroelectricity.
Globally, SLS used just over 6,400 m3 of water in FY21, enough to fill an Olympic swimming pool 2.5 times or to manufacture 34 new laptops. That’s low compared to many industries because our services don’t require water as an input. Still, we want to minimize water usage at our Circular Centers. In Gustavsburg, we changed our toilets so that water usage is decreased by 30-40% per flush. Small changes contribute to making a big difference.
We’re proud that, together, these actions are anticipated to reduce the Circular Center’s Scope 2 emissions by 52%. Going forward, SLS is actively working to also decrease our Scope 3 emissions. We’ll do this, in part, by making our supply chain and freight movements more efficient. Our low carbon journey will benefit SLS, our clients and our planet.
