We’ve all heard the phrase, “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” Everyone at Sims Lifecyle Services (SLS) lives this each day. We are proud to be part of the Sims Limited family where, together, we play an important role in the circular economy by making valuable resources available for future use. Our company’s purpose, create a world without waste to preserve our planet, drives our 3,880 employees in 15 countries to constantly innovate to offer new solutions in metal, electronics and municipal recycling, and renewable energy.
Founded in Australia in 1917, Sims Limited is a global leader in metal recycling and electronics recovery, and an emerging leader in the municipal recycling and renewable energy industries. As a publicly traded company (ASX code: SGM), our mandate to be a responsible corporate citizen is integral to every element of our business. We demand compliance to the highest standards of environmental stewardship, human rights, health and safety, labor rules and anti-corruption practices. Transparency is critical to these sustainability efforts, as well as our governance and financial reporting.
All of the Sims businesses specialize in providing resourceful solutions to manage different material streams for retired electronic equipment, components and metals.
Sims Metal buys, processes and sells ferrous and non-ferrous recycled metals (steel, iron, copper and aluminium) across the United States, the United Kingdom and Australasia.
Each year, Sims Metal recycles more than eight million tonnes of secondary materials, reducing the demand for virgin materials and the amount of energy and water needed to make steel.
Sims Municipal Recycling (SMR) develops transformative waste management solutions for the megacities of the future. SMR processes around 660,000 tonnes of municipal recycling annually, leading urban recycling in New York City and managing parts of curbside recycling programs in Chicago, Palm Beach County and parts of New Jersey.
Sims Resource Renewal will create a truly closed loop in metal recycling by transforming the leftover material following metals recycling – auto shredder residue (ASR), which currently is landfilled – into useful products. This will allow us to close the loop on our own waste, save on landfill and energy costs and develop a new revenue stream.
Our joint venture, LMS Energy, is a leader in landfill gas-to-renewable energy and an innovator in solar on landfill technology, where capped landfill sites are converted to solar farms. With a total of 30 landfill biogas-to-energy projects and 20 flaring projects in operation across Australia and New Zealand, LMS generates more than 500,000 megawatt hours of baseload renewable electricity annually to power 90,000 homes.
These sustainability efforts and achievements are not going unnoticed. In January, the 2021 Global 100 listing of most sustainable companies in the world ranked Sims Limited at 57th. It marked our seventh inclusion on the Global 100 compiled by Corporate Knights, an independent consultancy. In November, we were awarded the inaugural 2021 Terra Carta Seal. Developed by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, the Terra Carta Seal recognizes companies that are driving innovation and demonstrating their commitment to, and momentum toward, the creation of genuinely sustainable markets.
Sims Limited is committed to furthering our efforts as a leading innovator in the global circular economy. To this end, we joined the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) in 2018. We continuously seek new ways to effectively improve our environmental track record and corporate citizenship practices. Collaborating with other members of WBCSD, we are confident this can be achieved.
As part of our membership in the WBCSD, SLS joined the Circular Electronics Partnership (CEP), launched in March 2021. CEP brings together 20 leading electronics companies with a vision and roadmap to a circular economy for the electronics industry and associated supply chain by 2030. SLS fully embraces CEP’s vision to, “unite leaders in tech, consumer goods and waste management, to identify how to do things better”.
Supported by Sims Limited, SLS continues to be a leading voice in driving sustainable reverse supply chains, while improving reuse potential and recycling rates for used electronics and data center equipment.
