Developed and released in 2021, SLS’ tool calculates the carbon reduction from reuse, redeployment, and recycling using data from units, both whole and components, processed at SLS Circular Centers on behalf of our clients.
The SLS Sustainability Calculator provides clients with transparent sustainability reporting suitable to contribute to corporate carbon accounting. Our robust and up-to-date data sets and transparent calculations provide proof points to withstand internal and external audits.
RLA’s award recognizes the value that the information from our Sustainability Calculator offers our clients. The detailed reporting helps clients to make better decisions regarding timing of hardware purchases, utilization of equipment and how equipment is transitioned to be repurposed. In addition to financial savings from reusing IT equipment, the SLS calculator enables our clients to make decisions on managing their reverse logistics and disposition of retired IT equipment to maximize their carbon savings and seek to continuously improve performance.
Closed Loop Decreases Landfill Volumes and Demand for Virgin Material
Reuse and recycling of electronic equipment impacts the entire reverse supply chain in a positive manner. Reuse extends the useful life of IT assets, resulting in less raw material being needed to manufacture new products. Decreased demand for raw materials means less strip mining and less energy consumed. It also results in decreased landfill waste. Recycling obsolete electronics diverts material from landfill or incineration. SLS invests in innovative technology to produce clean recyclables that can be used as a feedstock to replace virgin raw materials in making new products.
