Sims Lifecycle Services (SLS) has moved two steps closer to achieving our renewable electricity sustainability goal. We are pleased to announce that both of our SLS Circular Centers in India are now running on 100% certified renewable electricity, bringing the worldwide total to 7 SLS facilities. Our goal is to power all Circular Centers with 100% renewable electricity by the end of FY 2025.
The SLS Circular Centers in Greater Noida and Bengaluru have both offset all fossil fuel emissions through the use of renewable electricity certificates. Sims matches every megawatt these centers consume with hydro-generated renewable electricity, displacing power on the grid that would otherwise have been generated by non-renewable sources.
SLS will continue our pledge to adopt increased renewable electricity sources and will pursue a mixed strategy for supply, including renewable electricity contracts and on-premise renewable options.
Elsewhere in India, data center construction continues to expand, due largely to government initiatives, such as Digital India and the classification of data centers as government infrastructure assets. According to market researchers Arizton, the “India data center market will see a Compound Annual Growth Rate of 15.07% during 2022-2027”.1
In addition to construction, the Indian Federal Cabinet has approved new national emission pledges, known as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has also encouraged the use of renewable energy such as solar and wind power for data centers and is collaborating with the ministry of power on their various green and sustainable energy initiatives.2
The push for green initiatives in India means that their new data centers will all have one objective in common: sustainability and energy efficiency. New data centers are able to more easily adapt to green technology than established centers.
India’s national transition to the circular economy will also necessarily focus on extending the life of data center products and responsible recycling of these materials.
This national trend provides an enormous opportunity for a leader in data center circularity like SLS in one of the most emerging markets in the world.
SLS is pleased to play a part in the new sustainable landscape in India, through data center sustainability and renewable energy, as we move towards the common goal of reducing our carbon footprint.
