WEST CHICAGO, ILLINOIS – Sims Lifecycle Services (SLS), a global leader providing circular solutions for technology, was recognized for their sustainability efforts by the Reverse Logistics Association (RLA). SLS received RLA’s Green Reverse Logistics Award for the development of the company’s proprietary Sustainability Calculator. The annual award honors companies that demonstrate leadership and measurable results while sustainably managing reverse logistics.
Developed and released in 2021, SLS’ sustainability tool calculates the carbon reduction from reuse, redeployment, and recycling from both whole and components of electronic units, that are processed at the company’s circular centers. The calculator enables SLS’ clients to make data-driven decisions to maximize carbon savings and continuously improve performance when managing the reverse logistics and the lifecycle of IT and data center equipment.
Sustainability and value recovery are intertwined, and reverse logistics managers understand that sound reuse and recycling practices in their supply chain can reduce their organization’s environmental impact, as well as return economic value. While dollar value has always been easy to quantify, carbon avoidance values have not been. SLS’s calculator seeks to overcome that challenge.
Reusing and recycling electronic equipment has a positive impact on the entire reverse supply chain. Reuse extends the life of IT assets and components, avoiding the consumption of raw material and energy required to manufacturing new products. Recycling obsolete electronics diverts material from landfill. Most calculators only provide results for assets that are recycled, giving an incomplete view of the overall carbon footprint. Incorporating reuse data provides a complete overview, providing clients with the opportunity to make more measurable, sustainability-focused decisions on asset processing and reverse logistics.
“When reverse logistics strategies include reuse and redeployment it is important that companies can quantify the environmental benefits of those activities,” said Sean Magann, chief commercial officer, “these activities are an important component in a company’s sustainability practices, and we want to enable our clients to measure and report on this.”
